Candyman
Luma Pictures, Melbourne | Lighting
This was another project I worked on during my COVID tenure at Luma, I believe late 2020 but was not released until September 2021. Led by Andrew Zinke who received a VES nomination for Best Supporting Visual Effects for his efforts, the film's main digital effects included Sherman Field’s photorealistic corpse (a ghost only seen in reflections) across various sequences, CG bees, and lots o' blood. The Melbourne studio was responsible for the art gallery sequence, which contained all of the above. Besides tackling the more straightforward blood augmentation shots I also took on the bespoke shots where Sherman hooks the Achilles tendon of the gallery owner as he tries to escape - involved numerous look dev and pass management iterations to fully sell as photo realistic. Probably the main lighting challenge on this project was Sherman who was set up digitally in 3D space as an inverted reflection - so if he is seen in a mirror, space wise for rendering he was on the other side of the wall in the distance which created a bit of mental gymnastics for lighting to match Sherman next to the live action characters.
